Today, Konrad Group – a digital marketing innovation company – announced its plans for the former Backpackers Hostel building at 460 King Street on the north-west corner of King & Spadina, which is currently under construction.
When refurbishing is completed in Fall 2015, the 140 year-old building will serve as the headquarters of Brainstation, an education company dedicated to digital marketing and programming; a co-working space called Brainstation Spaces and a coffee shop called Quantum Coffee.

Konrad Group revives historic 460 King Street West and launches innovation, culture, and digital learning hub
We are excited to announce the launch of a new innovation hub Konrad will be opening at the iconic corner of King and Spadina in downtown Toronto. Construction has begun at this nearly 20,000 sq. ft. landmark location. The facility first opened in 1875 as the Richardson House and is steeped in history, having welcomed patrons and guests over a period of 140 years. Before now, its most recent incarnation was as the Global Village Backpacker’s hostel.
This hub, the first of its kind in Canada, will uniquely combine three concepts in the single heritage space. First, it will be the new home and headquarters for BrainStation, Konrad Group’s digital and technology training arm, which offers courses, workshops, and training in web and mobile development, user experience, user interface design, and business. Through its presence in 460 King, BrainStation will continue to rapidly scale its programs in Toronto and globally.
This unveiling will also see the launch of BrainStation Spaces, a new shared office space throughout the facility for industry professionals and freelancers to work and be part of the King West community. Members will benefit from the highly creative and aspirational network, as well as nightly events and workshops delivered in conjunction with Canada’s leading businesses and thought leaders. Features of the BrainStation Spaces offering will include: lockers & storage, a common area & kitchenette, work stations, high speed internet, event space, conference rooms, private phone booths, and a community manager. BrainStation Spaces is the place to create, dream, and grow.
Finally, 460 King will bring a unique, premium coffee experience to King West through Quantum Coffee, a cafe nestled in the heart of the building. Quantum will feature cutting-edge, ‘retail of the future’ technology for its customers, including the first app-enabled pour over machine in Canada and an innovative service model which will include mobile ‘order ahead’ payments, allowing guests to skip the line and pick up their order when it’s ready to go. An emphasis will be placed on local, sustainable, and fresh ingredients and partners.
About 460 King, Geordie Konrad, Co-CEO of Konrad Group, says “The space will be an incredible place for creative and digital minds to connect. BrainStation is about helping people get involved with the digital world. We felt that the building needed to be designed as one cohesive hub — that’s why we are going to be launching Quantum Coffee on the main floor. We wanted a hospitality offering that fit with the culture and environment that we are building.”
The building has been undergoing refurbishing for months. It appears to be getting new walls, doors and windows. A glass enclosure is being installed installed in the west-facing wall.
