Q: GIVE US YOUR ELEVATOR PITCH.
David Albert: In short, we deliver great food to people’s homes.
Q: YOU ATTENDED DX3 LAST YEAR, WHICH ISN’T THAT LONG AGO. BUT WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST SUCCESSES YOU HAVE HAD SINCE ATTENDING?
David Albert: A year in our world is actually quite a long time, a lot has happened in the last year. A couple of the highlights: we’re significantly bigger. We are 5 or 6 times bigger than we were a year ago, and with that comes a much larger network of restaurants, probably 10x the number of restaurants and 5x the number of couriers. So there are a lot of people who are earning significant wages for themselves, or revenue for their business at the restaurant. And then we’re also, were now active in Montreal which we weren’t last year. We’re also active in about 35 cities across the globe.
Q: WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE THAT CRAZY GROWTH TO?
David Albert: What’s interesting about what we’re doing is that everybody who is using the product is winning. We have 3 customers: restaurants, couriers and the end users, who are getting food delivered to them.
For restaurants, we’re giving them an incremental revenue that is quickly becoming very meaningful for their business. We all hear that the restaurant industry is a hard one. If we’re able even give them a little incremental revenue it’s very beneficial, but in some cases we’re providing them with a lot of incremental revenue, so it’s even better. The same thing applies on the courier side. We’re providing great wages and flexible work and customers are getting access to food delivery from restaurants they wouldn’t have access to traditionally. We try to deliver from a variety of places, including places that traditionally don’t deliver.
Q: IT SEEMS THE EMPHASIS THESE DAYS IS ALL ABOUT CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE. I THINK THAT IS AT THE HEART OF WHAT EVERY COMPANY IS TRYING TO NAVIGATE RIGHT NOW. FOR FOODORA, DO YOU THINK IT COMES DOWN TO THE PEOPLE WORKING THERE, SCOUTING OUT UNIQUE RESTAURANTS, OR BOTH?
David Albert: I think it’s a mix. It definitely all starts with the restaurants. We have to have great restaurants. We also have a fairly complex delivery infrastructure that allows us to get to customers in a timely fashion, so if we just had the great restaurants but we didn’t have the couriers and we didn’t have great technology to help the couriers, it wouldn’t work.
Q: WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHANGES THAT YOU’VE SEEN IN THE DELIVERY SERVICE INDUSTRY OVER THE LAST YEAR?
David Albert: There are a couple of broad trends. Customers are getting used to a type of convenience in many services, not just ours, that they didn’t traditionally have. The other big one is there is this massive pool of independent contractors and labourers that are serving all of these business.
