This morning, UGO Wallet – an open mobile payments and digital wallet app from PC Financial and TD Bank was released made available to the public on the Google Play and Blackberry World app stores.
We’ve been writing about the UGO Wallet for about a year as the app has been developed. Initially planned for a spring 2014 launch, the app finally made its debut on certain NFC-enabled phones today.
When it was announced, UGO was billed as “Canada’s first open mobile wallet to combine multiple payment and loyalty programs in one convenient and secure mobile solution.” As you might expect from a PC Financial app, the wallet incorporates the PC Points loyalty program and has Loblaws as its first retail partners.
Open wallet app
The app was announced with the premise of being open to other loyalty programs and financial institutions. Last November, Barry Columb, President of President’s Choice Financial explained the significance of the open nature of the wallet in an email to the Dx3 Digest.
“An open wallet is a mobile wallet in which many types of cards from different financial institutions, retailers, and card issuers can be stored and used by the consumer. Ugo will be open to include partners in the retail, financial, loyalty and other sectors,” he wrote.
On its website, UGO poses the question: Why can’t your wallet be on your phone? Though the question was meant to be rhetorical, there are lots of phones that can’t be your UGO wallet.
The full list of phones that make use of UGO, and which banks and carriers they work with, can be found in the UGO Walley app description on the Google Play store. This is a common problem for mobile wallets and payment apps in Canada as banks, carriers, credit card companies, retailers and phone manufacturers (many of whom fall into more than one category) all compete to be at the centre of customers’ purchasing experience.
